3D Modelling of DVD Art.

To help gain perspective when assessing ideas for DVD artwork, I have created a 3D model of a DVD case, following the dimensions used in the Photoshop DVD template used previously posted

The template started with each panel , I then added the casing around the edge of the panel and rounded it where necessary, I added the area for the disc from the centre of the back panel, using dimensions from the web, the printable area is shown in white, and the other parts are a translucent grey. I then added an opening and the clips to hold in a booklet, as well as clips that would hold the case closed.

Modelling Example

To show how this would be used I downloaded the full cover for the DVD copy of Star Wars Episode one from here, I then cropped each panel and applied them to the model.

I took the the disc art from here and used Photoshop's quick selection tool to remove the non printed areas and saved as a PNG to keep transparency, this image was then applied to the disc area of the template

Finally I downloaded an image of a Star Wars poster to use as a booklet image, then applied this to the booklet area.

These images are not free to use and could not be used for commercial purposes.

Technical Details

This template was made using Trimble Sketchup a free program that is good for creating simple mock-ups of designs.

I have uploaded this template to Trimble’s 3D warehouse and it is available to download here.
