Text
The main title is written in “Digital Anarchy” a font developed by Chi Media, which is free for personal use. Both titles on the front and the spine are pure white with few alterations. I made one alteration on the front cover text to bring the two lines closer together. Both titles have been centred with the align tool.
I like this font as its rough texture gives it a good contrast to the space background and the right—angles give in a futuristic look.
Front Cover
The other visual aspect on the front cover design would be the planet, this is made up of high res images of Mars and Earth, I then used the Eliptical Marquee Tool to remove the planets original backgrounds, I then used the Rectangular Marquee Tool to remove each side of the right side of each planet, (I chose to use the right side of Mars as there was less shadowing on the edge) I then rotated the picture of Mars by 180 degrees and carefully lined the two planets.
I then opened this image of a mans silhouette in Photoshop and used the Quick Select Tool to remove its white background
I duplicated the layer into the PSD file with the two planets and placed it over the top of them both, I used the Color Burn Layer Type and applied a mask which I drew with a soft brush to fade away the bottom of the image.
The Back Cover
Text
The main body text was written in Calibri at 8 point size throughout. the text in the grey area is black and the text on the space background is white.
Layout
The top area of text would be for the general description of the movie and is just plain white text set on the space background, the pictures next to it are under rectangles drawn with the Rounded Rectangle Tool and the Rounded Rectangle Radius Resizer script mentioned in my last blog post.
The area underneath was created with the Rounded Rectangle Tool and the Rectangle Tool and then merged. I then opened the flying saucer image, cropped it to a better size and copied it into the mock-up
After adding the “Special Features” text I applied both the Bevel & Emboss and Outer Glow layer effects to give the layer a more 3 dimensional look, I also changed it to a bold red to be more striking against the dark background.
The final element of the back cover is the bottom panel, this is designed to hold the technical details and “small print” as well as the barcode and age ratings (space have been allocates at the bottom).
I wanted to give the area a metallic effect so after applying the grey colour I drew a bar at the top and applied the Bevel & Emboss, Stroke and Drop Shadow layer effects. after adding and aligning the three ellipse details I applied Bevel & Emboss, Inner Glow and Gradient Overlay to them,.
Evaluation
The parts of this design I like most would be the title font and the back cover layout, although I think the planet and silhouette image on the front cover looks good, I believe it would be more suited to a poster rather than a DVD case as it does not allow much room for any details such as age ratings, slogans etc.
