Final Design Composition: Front Cover Fence
First I duplicated the fence layer I had already made with the Magic Wand tool as a backup, I then used the Custom Shape tool to create a path, adjusted it as necessary with the Path Selection tool and converted this path into a selection, which I then removed.
I wanted to create an effect that showed that the fence had been cut with a futuristic tool, leaving the rest of the fence in its original condition, I needed to show the heat on the severed edge.
To create this effect I used the same tools to select and copy the edge of the fence, I then applied the colour manually with a soft brush, the idea was to have white on the very edge where it would be hottest (which was easy to apply, to colour the other side I used the Eye Dropper tool to get the exact colour of the fence and save it in my Swatches and slowly increased the red, I also added warmer colours into the middle of the effected area. This effect could have been produced with the Gradient tool, but I decided doing it by hand would create a better effect as a perfect gradient isn’t likely to happen in real life, doing it by hand with the brush tool added a degree of imperfection to the image.
Failed first attempt:
Initially I tried to create a square cut out, to do this I just duplicated the fence and erased where I thought it was necessary, I wasn’t happy with the overall result.
